Lately I have seen a lot of articles, quotes and upcoming movies about A.I. For those who are not keeping up with technology or are not Sci-Fi nuts, A.I. stands for Artificial Intelligence. Definition please….A.I. is the intelligence exhibited by machines or software. It is also the name of the academic field of study which studies how to create computers and computer software that are capable of intelligent behavior; thanks Wikipedia. I find these topics very interesting and I don’t get to spend enough time on them to really keep up.
One thing that bothers me is the feeling I get in my gut about the whole A.I. thing, is that it is the same feeling I have had before other events I was worried about and I ended up being correct on. I don’t believe it takes much imagination or foresight to see a scenario that ends, well, badly. Maybe my feeling is the normal fear of the unknown, hopefully. I mean look at all of the movies and literature about this and other things, they act like a scrying device showing us what is truly to come. Don’t get me wrong, I love these movies and literary worlds, love love love; but we might want to proceed with some caution. Some of the greatest scientific minds are a little anxious about it all. Coming soon to a theater near you is Ex Machina, what looks like a cool A.I. movie and maybe another salvo across our bow for what we might expect. I can’t wait.
So I find it interesting who I ran into on a trip I took recently. I was out and about with one of my nephews and we ended up at this cool little brewery in Evansville, Indiana, called Tin Man Brewing Company. It wasn’t by accident really; we looked up local places and decided to go there. What I do love is the coincidental nature of my encounter, the timing that plays into the event. In this fine establishment was this cool robot, the mascot I guess, their iconic logo; he/she was mechanical, electrified and was very welcoming. This just played into the narrative I was talking about, more news about A.I. and here I am met with this innocuous figure. I looked at it and I felt he/she was saying something to me, at first it felt like…hello, good to meet you. But as I stared at it I felt like I was glimpsing the future. I was peering into its eyes like the scrying ball, and as I looked at it closer the message seemed to become more of a statement like…I am coming.
Whatever your thoughts on this, if it even crosses your busy mind, it is coming. For all intents and purposes, it is here. Slowly working its way into everything we do even though we don’t see or at least recognize it; out-of-sight is out-of-mind. I know this will become more and more a topic that will be brought up and by the time we all pay attention, it will really be here. Now don’t get me confused with some crazy conspiracy theorist, I just like talking about things I find interesting, even if it is brief and only slightly aware. My thoughts only, are out of curiosity as to what it will truly look like, my friend in the picture or something entirely different. Will it be Artificial Intelligence as we perceive it, something Almost Indistinguishable or him…the Antique Imbecile?
