On a nice sunny day I was off of work and on my errands I was driving by a cemetery so I pulled in to have a look. Normally I just like driving or walking around, they are peaceful and interesting. I can think sometimes without distraction. I also notice the difference between American cemeteries and other countries; here they are seldom visited but in some countries the ancestors are still a part of the family. Most Americans stay away from a cemetery at all cost, I’m an aberration. I love the different markers, the old and the new but the older ones tend to be far more interesting; the designs vary far more than the new ones, they have more interesting sayings on them and the weathering from age itself lends them to be more appealing to the eye.
On one of my many trips to a cemetery, that sounds weird, I spotted something out of the ordinary, something I had not expected…a fox. Now I love wandering through a cemetery but I also love nature watching, so this was a two-for-one trip. I was in my car and I stopped hoping not to scare what appeared to be a young red fox. He or she was just sitting on a slab of granite sunning itself, very relaxed. I pulled out my phone and took several photos. We stared at each other for some time; apparently the fox was unconcerned by my presence. My belief is that this small fox was part of a family, probably nearby. There was actually a small hole in the ground next to the stone and there probably was a den below.
This was prime example of why I like to visit cemeteries, you never know what to expect. It was not the paranormal experience I might have been thinking of but it was a pleasant surprise. Me and the fox, in a cemetery just hanging out on a beautiful day, some might call us crazy but are we really? I would say we know more than most. The fox had clearly found a home that is peaceful and safe and I found my own peaceful time alone free for contemplation or inspiration. So call us what you will, you may see a fox or me just hanging out in a cemetery by ourselves and if you do, maybe you will decide to join us but if you don’t that is fine with us.
