So who wants to jump on a supersonic jet to get to Svalbard, Norway by 6:45 Eastern time? I know I do but I may be a little late. If we get there in time we will be able to see the solar eclipse today. Definition please, a solar eclipse is when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth blocking the light and plunging the Earth into darkness. Now this works as long as you are in the correct location on Earth to view the event, that’s the rub.
I have always loved this phenomenon in all of its forms, eclipses that is. A really cool fact about a solar eclipse and quite a coincidence is that the Sun is 400 times larger than the Moon…but the Sun is also about 400 times farther away than the Moon. I think that is awesome. I remember growing up and wondering why they seemed so similar in size. I have always loved looking up at the sky, day or night but the night has always been more interesting because the show is different depending on the day, month and year. Now with this exception I can get excited about the day, a solar eclipse definitely takes it up a notch on the wow chart.
How I would love to be there, two minutes and forty-five seconds of pure fascination. I mean who wouldn’t want to jump on a plane and go to see something like this at the last minute. Road trip! I can hear the lyrics from You’re so Vain by Carly Simon. So if you are inclined message me, soon. But if you think this may be a little too late or too extravagant, I can understand. On the bright side, we know when and where these events will happen thanks to science; so we can make plans to witness an all too brief cosmic dance right on our front door step.
