My drive home from work is about thirty minutes. The highway is usually pretty empty of other traffic and the landscape is mostly woods, fields and a few homes here and there. It is quite peaceful really and I am usually listening to some jazz or NPR. My mind unwinds, hopefully, and sometimes I get some of my most productive thinking done on drives like this. It is funny how that works out when you stop trying to think, that is when you get some of your best thoughts. I can organize some to dos or remember otherwise forgotten task. Ah, nothing like relaxation to remember stuff to do, irony.
What I love is that every once in a while I catch something I love. Usually I try to see how many Red Tailed Hawks I can spot and sometimes I see up to 4 during the day. One night recently I was driving home late and there isn’t much to see and I am usually looking out for deer crossing the road, thankfully there weren’t any. There was one thing that caught my eye, a water tower. Now the water tower isn’t new, it has been there for as long as I can remember and I don’t usually notice it but this night was different.
As I looked over I saw something else, not a water tower as I knew it but something completely different. Maybe it was the lighting that made such a difference to my brain. Maybe it was the foggy mist in the air that gave it an other worldly appearance. It probably was a combination of all of these and my relaxed state of mind that I saw the walkers from War of the Worlds, there was no doubt. I wished I had pulled over to take a picture but I am sure my phone would not have come close to capturing the image and would have in no way shown what I believed I saw. I just stared at it as long as I could while trying not to drive off of the road. I was in some kind of geek heaven.
This is what happens to me sometimes and I don’t know if I am alone in my experience of seeing things like this. All I know is that I find images in random patters and transform ordinary things into something that is familiar to me. This might explain my school years in some way. Either way it is a quirk I enjoy from time to time and not something I usually share. All I know is that when I saw that walker, tower, I was transported to a special place. I want to visit there often.
