I wake up and I’m tired as I lay here and the time ticks by. I clearly stayed up too late last night. I’m a night owl much to my morning’s demise. It’s my day off and I had such high hopes for this day to be full of something fun, some much needed to-do list completion, and battery recharging. My first cup of Earl Grey with honey is helping me write this, and come up with a plan to salvage today and tomorrow. What all shall I mark off today, no T.V., no internet, no movie…the list goes on. Okay, I may be back on the productive path.
Distraction, oh you evil minx; we live in a time with so much possibility of what we could do with our spare time and also distraction beyond imagining. The expression, killing time, is one of absolute truth; when we kill time we are killing our potential. Don’t get me wrong, we need down-time; we need time to not be productive. We should listen to our bodies, our brains, and our instincts, when it comes to understanding when we should relax. But too much of the time we our killing this special time we all have, this life and whatever it is for each of us. Even the Buddhist, who believes they will live again, understands what they do now is important. We need to shut out the flashing lights, the constant marketing, and focus our energy on the life result we want, not what others want.
Beyond distraction, there are road blocks, ditches, surprises, and unexpected everything’s that come up; we must juggle, hurdle, dodge, and mentally navigate a maze that may be a never ending loop with no escape. What great news that must be to anyone with a shred of hope left for anything, much less a dream beyond basic survival. There are things we can do to help minimize this to some degree, minimize is sometimes the key; the expression, keep it simple stupid, reminds us that to uncomplicate life we shouldn’t clutter it with so much we can’t keep up.
You may ask what is my point to this blog, and if it wasn’t ultimately clear, let me be absolute in my point…there is so much that can hold us back and much of that is out of our control…now listen very closely…don’t let what holds you back be you. If that was not clear enough it bears repeating, don’t be the reason you don’t succeed. We can be our own worst enemy, but we can also be the ones to take as much control of our lives as possible, if we try. Plan, even though plans go awry. Try, even though your effort may not yield results. Go forward with stubborn resilience when everything and everyone tells you it’s not possible. We are so susceptible to outside influences, even when we don’t realize it, and we usually don’t like to acknowledge it when we do see when it happens. My rant is concluded, I hope you are thusly inspired, your brain is activated, and your soul enlightened. If you have not attained these high thresholds yet…I will leave you with my good intentions and some quotes I enjoy.
